OnePlanet Capital closes tranche 3 of its Climate Change fund and invests into Diode.

OnePlanetCapital has successfully closed tranche 3 of its climate change fund with 100% growth in investor funds year on year. Its first investment from this tranche has been into EV suitability platform Diode.

One of the reasons that the climate tech investment space is so different and resilient at the same time is that a lot of the companies we see are backed by regulation. This creates a unique dynamic in this sector as you not only have corporate momentum and demand side pull from consumers but also black and white regulatory forces which create huge amounts of market stimulation for start-ups.

Many investors naturally think of core renewable energy businesses such as wind and solar when we talk about climate change investments. But the reality is that every sector of the economy is becoming involved in tackling climate change, from energy markets and transport solutions through to sustainable consumer propositions.

2020 and 2021 were years of strong investment into clean tech and ESG in general. Years of ignored warnings about climate change were finally became with Mark Carney famously quoting in June 2021 ‘’Addressing climate change is an amazing commercial opportunity. It is about turning an existential risk into the greatest opportunity in our time. The opportunity is unprecedented’’.

As the OnePlanetCapital team begins to shift focus onto the next investment tranche here is some insights into how the current investments are progressing as the 2022/2023 tax year gets underway.

The OnePlanetCapital flagship fund is an EIS fund that focuses on early-stage companies combating climate change. One of the key challenges in educating investors about the fund is to explain how the impact driven nature of the fund combines with the strong investment returns which are possible from the space we invest in. We finished the 2021/2022 tax year with 4 investments into EIS qualifying early-stage businesses that really demonstrate the range and the growth potential in the climate change sector we are investing in. Namely GoThrift, Adaptavate, Swytch and &Sisters. This brings the portfolio to 8 companies with these 4 joining Zedify, GoodClub, Earthly & RadPropulsion.

The OnePlanetCapital Sustainability EIS fund invests into high growth potential companies that are combating climate change. Following the successful deployment of capital into its first tranche there has been good news from two of these investments.
